Literature-adapted films to screen in Italy

Dedicated to promoting the classics of Taiwan literature and culture in Italy, the Cultural Division of Taipei Representative Office in Italy, in collaboration with the Department of Foreign Languages, Literatures and Cultures of Roma Tre University, organized a series of events under the topic "Reading Taiwan Literature II: Translation and Promotion Plan of TV Series Adapted from Taiwan Classic Literature." Four rounds of film screenings and three seminar sessions will be held from Oct. 6 through Nov. 8, in hopes of attracting young Italian readers to better understand Taiwanese classic literature.

"Reading Taiwan Literature II" was launched by the Ministry of Culture and Taiwan Television Enterprise in 2017. The series adapted from classic Taiwan literary works including "The Doctor's Mother (先生媽)" by Wu Zhuo-liu (吳濁流), "Rose, Rose, I Love You (玫瑰玫瑰我愛你)" by Wang Chen-ho (王禎和), "Enchantress (妖精)" by Wang Ting-kuo (王定國), and "La Dolce Vita (生活是甜蜜)" by Lee Wei-jing (李維菁).

Su Shuo-bin (蘇碩斌), a professor at the Graduate Institute of Taiwan Literature of National Taiwan University and the former director of the National Museum of Taiwan Literature, will be invited to host seminars revolving around the theme of Taiwan literature on Oct. 20, 24, and 25. The seminars will be sharing postcolonial literature, the current situation of modern poetry, and the trends relating to adaptations of literature for screenplays.

The "Reading Taiwan Literature I" translation and promotion plan attracted students from Roma Tre University, Accademia di Belle Arti di Roma, The Sapienza University of Rome, the Ca' Foscari University of Venice, and the University of Milan to participate. The event aims to highlight the uniqueness of Taiwanese literature and cultivate translation talents.
