Taiwan Film Festival Edinburgh to kick off in the UK

The Taiwan Film Festival Edinburgh returns to cinemas for its third edition, featuring a packed line-up of Taiwanese films that will be screening between Oct. 15 to 20 at the Summerhall and Everyman Edinburgh cinemas in the UK.

This year's edition will present a total of 11 films from Taiwan, Japan and South Korea, including six features and five shorts under the theme of the "(un)Usuals," focusing on people, events, and relationships that usually are not considered as part of the mainstream experience. The program of the festival consists of three strands, including "Short: Being Alone Together," "Doc Replay: Portraits" and "Chen Yi-Wen."

Inspired by the famous quote from British poet John Donne: "no man is an island," the strand "Short: Being Alone Together" features two Taiwanese shorts "Where Am I Going? (當一個人)," and "Can You Hear Me? (講話沒有在聽)," as well as feature films "Siren" from Japan and "A Taxi of Coldness" from South Korea.

The other strand "Doc Replay: Portraits" presents two documentaries, "The Catch (捕鰻的人)" and "When the Dawn Comes (黎明到來的那一天)." Directed by Zhang Hong-jie (張弘榤), "When the Dawn Comes" revolves around the story of Chi Chia-wei (祁家威), the LGBT+ rights and AIDS awareness activist and also the first person in Taiwan to publicly come out as gay.

The last strand "Chen Yi-Wen" is a retrospective of the career of Taiwanese filmmaker and actor Chen Yi-wen (陳以文). The retrospective features a hand-pick selection of films from Chen's acting career including "The Man From Island West (西部來的人)," "Growing Pains (少年阿堯)," "Increasing Echo (修行)," "The Cabbie (運轉手之戀)" and "Treat or Trick (詭扯)."
