The Taiwanese television series “Three Tears in Borneo (聽海湧)” received a nomination in the International Panorama Competition of the Series Mania Festival on Mar. 18. This marks the first time a television series from Taiwan has been recognized in this competition, and it stands as the sole work from Asia selected for the festival this year.
Based in Lille, France, since 2018, Series Mania has become the biggest event dedicated uniquely to television series in Europe. Its festival offers exclusive world premieres of the greatest international series on the big screen, giving its audience 8 days of discoveries, parties, and masterclasses with some of the most renowned personalities in the series world.
“Three Tears in Borneo” tells a story where three young Taiwanese brothers recruited by the Japanese army are responsible for guarding prisoners of war in a camp in Borneo during the Second World War.
Sun Chieh-heng (孫介珩), the series director, expressed his hope to shed light on the intricacies of Taiwan’s history. He emphasized that by understanding the complexity of Taiwanese society, greater inclusivity and empathy could be fostered among its members.
“Three Tears in Borneo”, a five-episode series, is expected to broadcast in the third quarter of this year in Taiwan.
