Nian Bi-hua honored with National Crafts Achievement Award

The National Taiwan Craft Research and Development Institute (NTCRI) hosted the National Crafts Achievement Award 2023 ceremony on Dec. 23. This year, craftswoman Nian Bi-hua (粘碧華) was named the award recipient. Culture Minister Shih Che presented the award to Nian and commended her for her selfless contribution to the innovation and education of traditional embroidery techniques.

Working in the embroidery field for four decades, Nian devoted herself to education on the craft by regularly organizing exhibitions, seminars, and educational programs in the country. Notably, she also teaches in schools in rural areas and indigenous villages, dedicated to the popularization of embroidery and the cultivation of new talents.

Minister Shih highlighted that Nian is the first female recipient of the National Crafts Achievement Award, as well as the first who was acknowledged in the fiber art and craft category.

In conjunction with the award, a special exhibition featuring Nian’s crafts is also taking place at the Craftsmanship Hall of the NTCRI in Nantou County from now until Apr. 7, 2024.
