Crowd Lu is a Taiwanese singer-songwriter and actor. He has achieved the impressive feat of winning Taiwan's three biggest awards—the Golden Melody, Golden Bell, and Golden Horse Awards—making him the youngest triple winner in the country’s history. Lu’s voice is powerful and moving, and his songwriting is inspired by everyday life, showcasing a pure and unadorned quality that makes it easy for listeners to connect with.
Crowd Lu grew up in a music-loving family. His grandmother was passionate about listening to music and would tune into local radio stations to listen to Taiwanese singers like Chris Hung (洪榮宏) and Yeh Chi-tien (葉啟田). His mother, on the other hand, loved collecting Western songs and jazz vinyls. These experiences helped shape Crowd Lu's keen ear and passion for music. In 2003, Lu graduated from high school and enrolled in Tamkang University. During his freshman year, he was involved in a car accident, being hospitalized after being hit by a bus. During this recovery, he happened to start playing the guitar and began composing music. During a live performance, Lu gained popularity by imitating the singing style of Russian tenor Vitas, and his video quickly went viral on the Internet. After that, he began participating in singing competitions at university.
In 2005, Lu won the top prize in the creative category and the Most Popular award at the National Chengchi University Golden Melody Awards. He also won both the creative and solo categories at the Golden Song Awards held by Tamkang University. At the end of 2006, he began touring various breakfast shops, campus guitar clubs, record stores, and male dormitories across the country. Crowd Lu has a deep love for the guitar and describes it as his closest friend. Since his college days, he has been touring campuses throughout Taiwan with the "I Love Guitar Club." Even today, he will still perform for free. For him, this is both a passion and an opportunity to make new friends. He enjoys performing up close for audiences and the beautiful moments that music brings.
The music producer Tiger Chung (鍾成虎) was amazed by the way Lu blends his musical intuition with elements from everyday life. In 2007, they collaborated on three singles, including "Hey I'm Gonna Go (淵明)," "Good Morning (早安，晨之美)," and "Colleges Blues (啊！大岩壁)." "Good Morning" was named in the Top 10 Outstanding Singles of 2007 by the Chinese Musicians Association. In 2008, Crowd Lu released his first original album "100 Ways of Living (100種生活)," emphasizing a genuine and sincere image that resonated with listeners. The album quickly rose to the top of Taiwan’s three major pop music charts in its first week and he was invited to perform at the 19th Golden Melody Awards ceremony. The following year, Lu won the Best New Artist Award and Best Composer Award at the Golden Melody Awards for this album. On August 23 of the same year, he held his first ticketed solo concert at the Taipei International Convention Center.
After finishing his compulsory national service, Lu went through a creative slump. One day in 2015, he remembered his grandfather's journey from Taipei to Tainan after a failed business venture. Following in his footsteps, Lu spent 11 days walking back home. During this trek, he made the decision to pick up his guitar again and dive back into his music career.
In 2017, Lu was invited by director Chu Yu-ning (瞿友寧) to star in the TV drama "A Boy Named Flora A (花甲男孩轉大人)" as the male lead, Cheng Hua-jia. His acting was highly praised and the show received great reviews and high ratings, even winning the Best Drama Award at the Golden Bell Awards. Lu himself won the awards for Best Newcomer and Male Lead in a Drama. Additionally, the theme song he created for the show, "He-R (魚仔)," won the awards for Best Composer and Song of the Year in the drama category, taking his career to new heights.
In 2020, singer-songwriter Crowd Lu won the Best Original Song Award at the Golden Horse Awards for his theme song to the movie "Your Name Engraved Herein (刻在你心底的名字)." This achievement made him the youngest Taiwanese artist to win the "Triple Crown" of the Golden Melody Awards, Golden Bell Awards, and Golden Horse Awards. Furthermore, in the same year, he was selected as one of the recipients of the 58th Ten Outstanding Young Persons Awards in the category of Culture and Arts.
