Artist-in-residency opportunities offered by nation’s top R&D lab

To support interdisciplinary cooperation in the arts, science, and technology, the Ministry of Culture has partnered with the Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI) to kick off "Arts@ITRI," a unique art-technology residency program, to encourage scientific research institutions to open their laboratories for artistic collaboration.

The program aims to provide multiple paths for artistic creation, instill imagination in scientific research, and create different modes of cooperation. By having artists taking up residency at the national research organization that serves to strengthen the technological competitiveness of Taiwan, the Ministry hopes to establish an immersive and cooperative platform for promoting interactions between science and art.

"Arts@ITRI" will focus on three main areas of cross-sector cooperation — tactile senses and new media; automation and 3D design/printing; and smart image analysis and artificial intelligence, which correspond with three ITRI laboratories: Smart Sensing and New Media Lab, Smart Manufacturing Integration Lab, and Smart Image Analysis Lab.

Artists will receive the opportunity to work side by side with ITRI researchers, have access to developing technology and scientific equipment, and be provided with a space for rehearsal or creation.

The "Arts@ITRI" residency is an unparalleled project that provides artists with a rare opportunity to enter scientific research laboratory for co-creation experiments, and the first edition was launched last year. For the 2019 edition, ITRI selected creative projects proposed by Lee Wen-cheng's (李文政) "Piànn-Tiûnn Art Impact Program (拚場藝術撞擊)," Chiu Chieh-sen's (邱杰森) "C&C Art Group (森嵐工作方圖)," and Huang Yi's (黃翊) "Huang Yi Studio+" teams.

Accompanied by ITRI's scientific advancements for more than seven months, the three projects have achieved valuable results. For the 2020 edition, the artists will not only have access to ITRI's laboratories, researchers, and resources, the research body has also arranged for additional visits to other local laboratories to further enrich the residency experience.

The 2020 open call for Arts@ITRI will accept applications through June 30, 2020, with three eight-month residency opportunities slated for Aug. 30, 2020 through April 30, 2021. Individual and group proposals are all welcome.
