'The Dream of Craft' exhibition series to be held in Taipei, Tainan and Taichung

"The Dream Of Craft," an exhibition presenting unique artworks by master artisans and finalists for the 2020 Taiwan Craft Competition, will be held at Shin Kong Mitsukoshi Department Store’s Taipei, Tainan, and Taichung braches from Dec. 4 to Jan. 18, 2021.

Organized by the National Taiwan Craft Research and Development Institute (NTCRI), the travelling event is set to showcase more than 100 exquisite pieces, including sculptures by master woodcarver Yeh Ching-yi (葉經義), who is the recipient of 2019 National Taiwan Craft Achievement Award, the nation's highest crafts prize.

In addition to extraordinary creations certified by NTCRI-led certification program Taiwan Good Craft (臺灣優良工藝品) and innovative works of Taiwan's quality craft brand Yii, the exhibition will also present works by bamboo-weaving artist Tseng Feng-chu (曾鳳珠) who in 1998 received the qualification of permanent exemption from initial review for the Taiwan Craft Competition, the largest contest of its kind in the nation, and has been invited to the annual Dream of Crafts Exhibition every year.

During the month-long exhibition, a series of craft courses by design and craft professionals will be available for visitors who wish to explore delicateness of Taiwanese crafts.

After a thorough assessment by the jury panel from a pool of 11 veteran artisans and professionals from academic and design communities, a total of 65 pieces, among 472 entries, were selected as finalists this year for the first prize, second prize, third prize, five honorable mentions, and 53 finalist awards.

The award ceremony will take place at the Shin Kong Mitsukoshi in Taipei City on Dec. 4.

The Taiwan Craft Competition is a platform for showcasing the ingenuity of local craftsmen, a channel for facilitating the accumulation of energy and exchange of experiences in Taiwan's crafts industry.

Organized by NTCRI, the competition also serves as a mechanism for driving the industry to continuously upgrade Taiwan's daily aesthetics.
