Canadian film institute showcases seven films of Taiwanese director Edward Yang

The Cinematheque, a Canadian film institute and media education centre, is hosting a screening event titled “Are You Lonesome Tonight? The Films of Edward Yang” from Mar. 28 to Apr. 29, showing seven films of the late Taiwanese director Edward Yang (楊德昌, 1947-2007).

As a leading figure in the Taiwanese New Wave Cinema movement in the 1980s, Edward Yang was a filmmaker who illustrated the life of the middle class in a rapidly changing Taiwanese society through beautiful long shots.

The seven films included in this event are: “A Confucian Confusion (獨立時代), ” “That Day, on the Beach (海灘的一天),” “Taipei Story (青梅竹馬),” “The Terrorizers (恐怖份子),” “A Brighter Summer Day (牯嶺街少年殺人事件),” “Mahjong (麻將),” and “Yi Yi (一一).”

The Cinematheque, founded in 1972, is devoted to understanding the art and history of Canadian and international cinema and the impact of moving images and screen-based media in people’s lives.
