Freedom House has borne witness to the Japanese colonial era, the relocation of the Nationalist government to Taiwan, and the island's post-war reconstruction. In the wake of World War II, Freedom House even served as an important location for diplomatic tasks, earning itself the nickname of "The Ambassadors' Home."
After the Nationalist government relocated to Taiwan in the late 1940s, Datong House was planned to help the government in its efforts to secure US support, standing witness to both the development of the US-Taiwan cooperative relationship and Taiwan's own economic development since.
