COMMUNITY EMPOWERMENT TAKES ROOT

Taiwan’s recent milestones in empowering rural communities have set the bar for the Chinese-speaking world. To survey the progress in the Taitung rift valley, Minister Lung Ying-tai made a special visit on Nov. 3.


GOLDEN COMIC AWARDS WINNERS HONORED

The Lifetime Achievement Award of the 5th Golden Comic Awards, the top honor for comics in Taiwan, was presented to cartoonist Ao Yu-hsiang on Nov. 4 for his three-decade contribution to Taiwanese comics.


TAIWANESE ARTISAN ACCLAIMED IN JAPAN

Taiwanese metal smith Wu Ching-chih has beaten out more than 300 competitors to win the top prize in the 2014 ITAMI International Craft Exhibition in Japan with his raindrop-inspired sake cup design.


ICOM HEAD LAUDS TAINAN MUSEUM

Dr. Hans-Martin Hinz, chairman of the International Council of Museums (ICOM), led an eight-member delegation of the International Committee for Regional Museums (ICR) under the ICOM to visit the National Museum of Taiwan History.


TAIWAN-JAPAN JOINT ART SHOW IN TOKYO

“The Present and Future of Japanese and Taiwanese Contemporary Art,” which is scheduled to run from Nov. 4 to 16 at the Tokyo University of the Arts, features a total of seven Taiwanese and seven Japanese artists.


TAIWANESE PUPPETS TO WOO VANCOUVER

Taiwan's Taiyuan Puppet Theatre and Chin Fei Feng Marionette Theatre Troupe have been invited as the featured guests of the 2014 Ouxi Taiwanese Puppetry Festival organized by the University of British Columbia.


EMERALD INITIATIVE: OPEN CALL

Proposals will be accepted from Oct. 30 to Dec. 1, 2014 for projects that arrange for Southeast Asian personnel to visit Taiwan for cultural and artistic exchanges in 2015. Grants will be awarded in amounts up to NT$500,000 per project.


ACCELERATE@CERN: OPEN CALL

To promote innovative cross-field cooperation in science and the arts, the Republic of China (Taiwan) Ministry of Culture and the European Council for Nuclear Research (CERN) have come together to create Accelerate@CERN TAIWAN.


'THE WOOD PARTY'

Organized by the National Taiwan Craft Research and Development Institute, a four-month workshop and ensuing “The Wood Party” exhibition represents the institute’s hopes for revitalizing and re-thinking traditional woodwork.


'2014 PACIFIC POETRY FESTIVAL'

The 2014 Pacific Poetry Festival, which will take place between Nov. 21 and 23 at the Pacific Ocean-facing northeastern county of Hualien, will feature Xi Mu-rong, one of Taiwan’s most celebrated female poets.
