Austronesian arts exhibition tour kicks off in Taipei

The Austronesian International Arts Award and Taitung Art Exhibition Tour, which is co-organized by Taitung County government and the Ministry of Culture, kicked off at the National Dr. Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall in Taipei on Monday and will run through May 7.

Director-general Wang Fu-lin expressed the hope that all genres of arts can be displayed at the National Dr. Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall to inspire more originality. By overcoming the geographical barriers to display the award-winning artworks, the unusual exhibition introduces the Austronesian and Taitung cultures to residents in the greater Taipei area and other visitors from home and abroad, said Vice Magistrate of Taitung Chang Chi-yi.

Some rather abstract artworks created with such common materials as wood, wool, shell and iron are on display at the exhibition room on the third floor, and on the second floor there is a "tomoko,” a Solomon Island war canoe. Also part of the exhibition is a wooden canoe built by the Tao tribe on Taiwan's Orchid Island, which is decorated with carvings, paint and rooster feathers symbolizing good harvest.

The exhibition displays a wide variety of art genres, from paintings, three-dimensional works to installation art. The action art awardee Liao Kuan-yuan also organized an event titled "Creation Site of the Phenomenon of Life” and visitors are welcome to participate.
