Apply for artist residency program in New York today

  • Date:2013-04-08

The Taipei Cultural Center in New York is now seeking applications for an artist residency program hosted by Brooklyn-based Residency Unlimited (RU), a non-profit organization that fosters the creation and dissemination of contemporary art through artist residency initiatives. It is the center's first collaboration with RU.

Two artists or curators, whose proposals are most in line with the characteristics of Greater New York, will be selected among Republic of China citizens.

The finalists will receive financial support from the Ministry of Culture to implement their projects in New York. Meanwhile, RU will provide them with assistance during their residency between June and August as well as the planning of a presentation at the end of the program.

Susan Yu, director of the Taipei Cultural Center, gave some examples of potential projects such as a photography project featuring New York skyscrapers, video recording of the subway culture in New York, a study on an Off-Broadway theater, or choreography of Harlem's street dance.

The center and RU will review the applicants' proposals and their abilities as shown in their previous artworks, hoping to take the initiative in helping Taiwanese artists or curators showcase their talent in the global art scene by partnering with RU's resources and expertise.

RU was founded in 2009 by a group of senior art administrators, curators and artists. The resource platform's main mission is to foster art exchanges and cultural connections. Its headquarters is located in a renovated old church in Brooklyn.

The deadline for applications is April 30.
