Museum workshop to preserve cultural assets with 3D technology

To promote the application of 3D modeling technology in the preservation of cultural assets, a case study workshop will take place at the Taitung-based National Museum of Prehistory on Sept. 6.

During the workshop, professionals and authorities from related fields will be invited to discuss their experiences and share their projects. Additionally, manufacturing representatives will also display their innovative 3D facilities and technology at the museum.

Working with the Bureau of Cultural Heritage, the National Museum of Prehistory aims to familiarize people with Taiwan's cultural preservation methodology by showcasing the fruitful outcomes of interdisciplinary projects that add to the global body of Chinese-language research.

This workshop will feature 3 major topics of discussion by introducing relevant cases in the areas of "3D modeling of cultural relics," "3D modeling of venues and landscapes," and "further applications of 3D modeling and digitization technology."

The Bureau of Cultural Heritage has made remarkable progress regarding the 3 aforementioned applications of 3D technology. The National Museum of Prehistory has also launched Taiwan's first digital 3D archive of cultural artifacts in early 2017.

The acquisition of 3D data has also been used in environmental geomorphology and archaeological excavations and incorporated with practical research, exhibition curation, and education programs. Through this digital preservation technique, the National Museum of Prehistory keeps 3D records of its collection and applies digital representation of such relics in its "Smart Museum" project.

In the future, the research team from the National Museum of Prehistory will combine 3D technology with relic restoration and restore invaluable assets to their prehistoric state.
