Taiwanese film 'Synapses' wins Best Film Award in Asian Film Festival

Taiwanese family drama "Synapses (那個我最親愛的陌生人)" directed by filmmaker Chang Tso-chi (張作驥), won the Best Film Award at the 18th edition Asian Film Festival which took place at the Cinema Farnese in Rome, Italy, from June 17 through 23. 
 
 Known for his unique take on magic realism and human-interest stories, Chang’s works often premiered in major film festivals. "Synapses," starring Taiwanese actress Lu Hsueh-feng (呂雪鳳), is a drama depicting how members of a family deal with their emotional conflicts in the face of Alzheimer's disease. 
 
 Upon receiving the good news, Culture Minister Lee Yung-te offered his congratulations. Taiwan's representative to Italy Lee Sing-ying (李新穎) received the award on behalf of Chang in Rome, he remarked that Italy has been actively promoting Asian films through the film festival to foster cultural exchange between the East and West, and the award is an affirmation of Taiwan’s film creations. 
 
 Representative Lee added that, in a previous collaboration between the organizer of the film festival and Taipei’s representative office in Italy, a total of 7 Taiwanese films were showcased as part of "Taiwan's director film week" at the festival in 2017. 
 
Since 2012, Taiwanese films have been nominated and won awards at the film festival, including comedy film "Bear it (熊熊愛上你)" by Cheng Fen-fen (鄭芬芬), romance-comedy "When a Wolf Falls in Love with a Sheep (南方小羊牧場)" by Hou Chi-jan (侯季然), "Zone Pro Site (總舖師)" by Chen Yu-hsun (陳玉勳), as well as "The Last Verse (最後的詩句)" by Tseng Ying-ting (曾英庭). 
 
 Organized by Cineforum Robert Bresson, the Asian Film Festival brings together the best films from countries such as China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Thailand, Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, Vietnam, South Korea, Japan. The film festival includes a competition with sixteen films and five awards awarded by a jury of film critics, to the best film, best director, best actor, best actress, and most original film.
