Taiwanese artist Wu Chien-hsing chosen for New York's TAA residency program

The Taipei Cultural Center in New York collaborates with New York's Triangle Arts Association (TAA) for the fourth time to launch the 2022 residency program for artists. Taiwanese artist Wu Chien-hsing (吳建興) has been selected as the winner and he is set to participate in the residency program this month, which will be held in the Dumbo neighborhood of Brooklyn, as well as experience the latest vibes of art and culture in New York.

A total of 22 artists submitted applications for this residency program. Nova Benway, director of TAA, noted that Wu's work exhibits a rigorous conceptual practice that reflects in many different media and narratives. He will have the opportunity to interact with other resident artists, which will be helpful to his video creation and nonlinear narrative film work.

Born in Puli of Nantou County, Wu received his master’s degree from Taipei National University of the Arts in 2017, specializing in mixed media creations with ready-made objects. He has participated in major exhibitions locally and internationally, including Fair for Modern and Contemporary Art in Germany (2016), Beijing Photo Biennial (2015), 2nd CAFAM·Future Exhibition Observer-Creator (2015), Changing Identity (2014) in Poland, among others. Several of his artworks have been collected by museums such as the National Taiwan Museum of Fine Arts and the Central Academy of Fine Arts in Beijing. In 2020, he established Serendipity House-Antique & Cafe & Art Space.

Wu's work and practice have always originated from the properties of everyday objects through personal observations and then to evoke sentimental ambience from the expansion of personal experiences. Wu shared that he enjoys exploring different industries and their cultures, and incorporating them into his work. During the three-month residency, resident artists will have the opportunity to meet and engage with local artists and curators from New York, seeking ways and stories that are closer to the history and people of the area. Wu will eventually present his findings and experiences in the form of images.

Since 1982, TAA has provided opportunities for over 4,500 artists to connect with each other and build their practice through workshops, residencies, public events, and exhibitions.
