Taiwanese designers won the Best Recording Package award at Grammys

The 64th Grammy Awards, recognized as the most outstanding achievement in the music industry of the United States, took place in Las Vegas on April 3. Taiwanese designers Li Jheng-han (李政瀚) and Yu Wei (于薇) won the Grammy Award for Best Recording Package with their design for the album "Pakelang (八歌浪)." It was also the first time that Taiwanese designers won a Grammy Award.

The album, Pakelang, was the first collaboration between "2nd Generation Falangao Singing Group (第二代馬蘭吟唱隊)" and the band "The Chairman (董事長跨界大樂團)" who rearranged the Amis' ancient ballads with elements of reggae, electronic and rock music. The designers Li and Yu started out with the images of Taiwan’s east coast (location of Falangaw Tribe) by using paper cutouts to show the silhouettes of coastlines, mountain ranges and the Amis people singing. The design concept symbolizes that Taiwan is an ocean state and the aboriginal cultural heritage has been passed on continuously. Their work for their first nomination won the hearts of the judges.

Upon receiving the good news, Culture Minister Lee Yung-te called the team to congratulate them. Lee said in recent years, Taiwan’s creative works have made significant achievements on the international stage. He added that to show Taiwan's soft cultural power to the world, MOC will continue to advance the creative power, construct a sound cultural industry ecosystem, and push forward the development of the industry in every aspect.

The Best Recording Package award is one of a series of Grammy Awards presented for the visual look of an album.
