Published by the National Taiwan Museum (NTM), the audio picture book “Hide-and-seek” (Bih-sio-tshue, 覕相揣) was honored with the International Youth Library’s White Ravens Award. “Hide-and-seek” not only introduces the natural ecosystem on the island, it also exhibits the beauty of the Taiwanese Hokkien language through the prerecorded audio content.
The audio picture book is based on a true story that spans 150 years, about two animal researchers who searched for Formosan clouded leopards in Taiwan. 2023 marks the 10th year since the declaration of clouded leopards’ extinction, and this book once again raises awareness of the issues of environment and natural ecosystem.
“Hide-and-seek” is a joint effort by illustrator Page Tsou (鄒駿昇) and the NTM in 2022, produced in both Chinese and Taiwanese Hokkien. Constructed in ingenious layouts and meaningful storylines, this picture book, soon after being published, won the 2022 BolognaRagazzi Award (BRAW) along with the 19th Golden Butterfly Award – Publishing Art in Taiwan and the Taipei International Book Exhibition Award. It was even selected as one of the 100 outstanding picture books for the BRAW Amazing Bookshelf 2023.
The NTM is committed to preserving and resuscitating cultural and biological diversity. In recent years, NTM has offered both physical and digital multilingual audio guide services, as well as launched school courses and summer camps that promote Taiwanese Hokkien. In addition, the museum also collaborates with cultural workers to provide guided tours in historical monuments and temples in Taipei, consistently working on relevant issues in art, culture, and nature.
“The White Ravens” is presented by the International Youth Library from Munich, Germany. Each year, the organization carefully selects publications in different languages and books from around the globe as recommendations for young readers.
