Curatorial project The Island Scene garners iF Design Award

“The Island Scene (島嶼風景),” a curatorial project featured at the Matsu Biennial 2023, won the prestigious 2024 iF Design Award. Consisting of eight unique works, this project transforms the military history and folk culture of the Matsu Islands into landscape art.

Co-organized by the Lienchiang County Government and the General Association of Chinese Culture (GACC), with “social design” as core concept, the Biennial launches a 10-year, 3-phase preparatory mechanism for public communication, local participation, and distinctive cultural identity. “The Island Scene,” co-curated by Nakaw Putun and Wu Han-chung (吳漢中), embodies the goals of the Biennial, placing art at prominent public spaces on the islands, presenting historical landscapes, war memories, and traditions embedded in ordinary life to create a “island museum.”

Lee Hou-ching (李厚慶), the Secretary-General of GACC, extended his congratulations to the curation team for their remarkable achievement. He expressed his belief that through this outstanding project, the international community will have the opportunity to deepen their understanding of the Matsu Islands even further.
