Traditional architectural painting master Chen Ying-pai passed away

The preserver of traditional architectural painting techniques, Chen Ying-pai (陳穎派), passed away on Mar. 12 at the age of 92. Culture Minister Shih Che mourned upon hearing this news, commending Chen’s lifelong dedication to transmitting traditional architectural painting techniques and laying a solid foundation for traditional crafts education in Taiwan.

Born in 1933, Chen began learning traditional temple painting from his father at the age of 12. He became an independent artisan before turning 20 and spent over seven decades perfecting his craft. In 2020, the Changhua County Government recognized him as the preserver of traditional architectural colored drawing techniques.

The Ministry of Culture highlighted Chen's contributions to the restoration of historical monuments and architecture over the years. His knowledge was passed down to his sons Chen Wen-chun (陳文俊) and Chen Tun-jen (陳敦仁), even to the artisan’s family members of the fifth generation. Currently, over ten of Chen’s family members are involved in the field, playing a pivotal role in preserving Taiwan’s traditional crafts.
