NHRM holds memorial for political victims during authoritarian rule

The National Human Rights Museum (NHRM) hosted a memorial service for political victims of authoritarian rule at the Jing-Mei White Terror Memorial Park on Mar. 23. Culture Minister Shih Che, Deputy Culture Minister Sue Wang (王時思), NHRM Director Hung Shih-fang (洪世芳) and other guests were present at the service.

Minister Shih stated that this annual event serves as a reminder to honor the victims of the political repression. He emphasized that by reflecting on the oppression these victims suffered, the people of Taiwan will never forget the wounded history. These collective memories can foster unity for Taiwanese people and bolster our courage to confront the looming threats to the country.

Minister Shih noted that since 2015, the memorial has been commemorating the names of political victims of the White Terror, with the number increasing from 7,000 to nearly 12,000. He added that the Ministry of Culture will commence an expansion project for the memorial and the construction of the exhibition building in April, showing the ministry’s commitment to uncovering the truth of the White Terror.
