Winners of the 33rd Golden Melody Awards

The 33rd Golden Melody Awards (GMA) announced this year's winners on July 2 at the Kaohsiung Arena. This year, a total of 173 works vied for 27 awards, including album and song of the year, best Mandarin, Taiwanese, Hakka, and Indigenous language albums, and best female and male singers, among others. A total of 1,544 albums and EPs, and 20,721 works were submitted to the GMA jury for consideration.


The biggest winner of the night was Singaporean singer-songwriter Tanya Chua (蔡健雅), who received a total of eight nominations and won four awards - her album "DEPART" was named Best Mandarin Album, Album of the Year and Best Vocal Album Recording, while she received the award for Best Female Singer (Mandarin).


The Special Contribution Award was awarded to songwriter Chen Fu-ming (陳復明) as well as late Taiwanese musician Chiu Chen (邱晨); Chinese singer-songwriter Cui Jian (崔健) took home the Best Mandarin Male Singer award for his album "Fei Gou (飛狗);" "Oh Love, You Are Much Greater Than I Imagined (愛情你比我想的閣較偉大)" by Taiwanese band EggPlantEgg (茄子蛋) won Song of the Year; Flesh Juicer (血肉果汁機) won the Best Band for the album "GOLDEN TAIZI BRO (GOLDEN 太子BRO);" Taiwan's Chamber Pop Duo Collage (珂拉琪) won the Best New Artist award for its debut album "MEmento MORI."


Established in 1990, the GMA is a multi-event musical celebration featuring mainly the Golden Melody Awards and the Golden Melody Festival. The Golden Melody Festival originated from the Golden Melody Week of 2010. In 2014, the Bureau of Audiovisual and Music Industry Development, Ministry of Culture transformed Golden Melody Week into a platform for B2B exchanges. The Golden Melody Festival is hosted in tandem with the GMA in the hopes of building the GMA into an event and award of global significance.
