Breathable Paiwan Slate House (會呼吸的排灣族石板屋), a traditional stone slate house located in Sandimen Township, Pingtung County in southern Taiwan, won the bronze medal in the category of Architectural Design at the 2022 Novum Design Award (NDA). This is the second time that this project has won an award in France, highlighting Pingtung's prowess in design.
According to a statement released by the Pingtung County Government, the restoration of the slate house was a collaborative effort between the County Government, Sandimen Pakedavai Culture and Arts Association, and Shu-Te University. The project previously received the silver award at the Paris Design Awards earlier this year.
The County Government added that Pingtung is establishing its brand image based on the concept of "local is global." The slate house not only gives the world a glimpse of the indigenous tribal culture, but also puts Pingtung onto the world stage.
This year, the Breathable Paiwan Slate House was chosen by the County Government to contend for the design award, which is an opportunity for the Paiwan stone slate house to shine on the world stage. The design team not only gave this stone slate house a brand-new look but also allowed the people to reminisce about the good old days. It carried on the important mission of cultural education, providing the younger generation a chance to understand the traditional life and culture of Paiwan and to inherit the Paiwan traditional culture.
