NCFTA revives classic theatrical performances with upcoming shows

The National Center for Traditional Arts (NCFTA) will showcase seven theatrical performances at the Taiwan Traditional Theatre Center (TTTC) in March, June, and July. Focusing on the theme of reinventing classic opera performances, the program "Restaging The Class (看家戲再現)" encompasses various theatrical categories, such as glove puppetry, Peking opera, and koa-á-hì (Taiwanese opera).

In March, there will be a variety of traditional theatrical performances available to audiences. The Benshi Theatre Company (本事劇團) is set to present classic Peking opera pieces, namely, "Asking the Woodcutter (問樵鬧府)" and "Coming Back to Life after Beaten Up (打棍出箱)." Meanwhile, the Taipei Puppet Theater (臺北木偶劇團) is scheduled to showcase a beiguan opera production called "Chin Chiung Toppling the Bronze Flag (秦瓊倒銅旗)."

In June and July, several Taiwanese opera performances will be presented, including "Ching Chan (青蟬)" by Ming Hwa Yuan Arts & Cultural Group (明華園戲劇總團), "The Unfaithful Husband Chen Shi-mei (陳世美.反奸)" by Shintrun Taiwanese Opera Troupe (薪傳歌仔戲劇團), "A Game of Strategy (孫臏鬥龐涓)" by Yi-Shin Taiwanese Opera Troupe (一心戲劇團), "An Accusation to the Emperor (六郎告御狀)" by Lee Ching Fang Taiwanese Opera Troupe (李靜芳歌仔戲團), and "Tsung-Pao Yang and Kuei-Ying Mu (楊宗保與穆桂英)" by Shih H.J.Taiwanese Opera Troupe (石惠君戲曲劇坊).

According to NCFTA director Chen Yue-yi (陳悅宜), this program is an important subproject of the organization, with an aim of reviving and passing on traditional culture and arts to the next generation. Starting in 2014, the NCFTA has been providing support to folk theaters to recreate their classic performance pieces that are at risk of disappearing. With the guidance of experienced performers, contemporary artists are able to reinterpret the classic works, thus giving new life to traditional culture and arts.
