'Pu Shuai-cheng: The Me Lives in the Closet'

"Pu Shuai-cheng: The Me Lives in the Closet,” a winner of the 2016 Digital Art Creation Competition Program held by the National Taiwan Museum of Fine Arts, will be on view in Taichung from Oct. 15 through Dec. 14.

Pu Shuai-cheng (蒲帥成) is a fine arts major at Taipei National University of the Arts. His creations usually present the opposition of concepts, such as purity versus chaos, or singular versus multiple. He is the silver medal winner in new media art at the 2014 ROC National Art Exhibition.

"The Me Lives in the Closet” is a work that presents the images created and deconstructed by Pu's consciousness during his questioning of the world system. Instead of creating a logical language, Pu takes a different approach and uses the concept of time to break the current language structure used by society.

The project showcases different images that only exist in Pu's mind and dreams to reflect the flow of time, such as a white-faced runner, a dancer with a red jacket, a long-haired athlete, and a light-speed train. Though the images seem like an odd combination, they all are connected by the story formed in Pu's mind.

Pu noted that the project allowed him to explore different methods of presentation, and how the same work would look different if presented through round-shaped or square-shaped materials. The closet, for example, is a metaphor that symbolizes a protective shelter shielding the artist from the outer world.

Deputy Director Chen Chao-jung (陳昭榮) of NTMoFA noted that the museum has devoted considerable effort to the development of digital arts in Taiwan. The competitive subsidy program launched in 2011 has supported many creative and experimental projects submitted by talented artists in Taiwan.
