'Freedom Love: 2016 Taipei Int'l Book Exhibition'

The upcoming 24th Taipei International Book Exhibition will offer a little something for everyone - the literature, illustrations, and films of 2016 theme country Hungary on one hand, and a retrospective exhibition on one of the most beloved female authors in Asia, Eileen Chang (張愛玲).

Details revealed in a Dec. 23 press conference included the 2016 slogan "Freedom Love,” which is taken from a poem by Hungarian poet Sándor Petőfi (1823-1849):

"Liberty, love!

These two I must have.

For my love I'll sacrifice

My life.

For liberty I'll sacrifice

My love."

"Exhibition of Eileen's Style,” which is timed to coincide with the second decade of her passing, will include personal items, manuscripts, photo albums, and paintings. Many of these items will be shown in Taipei for the first time, as the author passed away in Los Angeles in 1995.

The Taipei book fair attracts 500 thousand fairgoers on an annual basis. Last year's attendence included 648 publishers from 68 countries, and over 400 writers, illustrators, and publishers. The 2015 theme country was New Zealand.
