'You, Contemporary?'

An exhibition featuring contemporary aboriginal art will open at the National Taitung Living Art Center (國立台東生活美學館) from Nov. 14 through Feb. 14, 2016.

Titled "You, Contemporary? The Connection and Crossover of Aboriginal Art of the New Generation,” the exhibition will showcase artworks by 6 indigenous artists who were born in the 1970s to highlight the aesthetics of a younger generation.

The featured artists are: Wang Yu-shin (王昱心) of the Siraya tribe (西拉雅族); Sapod Kacaw (撒部‧噶照) and Iyo Kacaw (伊祐‧噶照) of the Amis tribe (阿美族); Malay Makuluwan (林琳) of the Puyuma tribe (卑南族); Labay Eyong (林介文) of the Seediq tribe (賽德克族); and Dondon Houmwm (東冬侯溫) of the Truku tribe (太魯閣族).

Various art mediums such as pottery, woven crafts, and installation art will be displayed to express the artists' ideas on modern concepts, and how they've transformed their cultural context into an art form.

In addition, concern over contemporary issues such as environmental challenges, vulnerability of minoritycultures, and extinction of indigenous languages will also be reflected through their artworks, such as a series of driftwood-turned-art installation reflecting the artist's concern over oceans and marine health.

From the older "de-aboriginalized” generationto the new generation of aboriginal-oriented identities, the exhibition will allow visitors to see the development of aboriginal art and how they connect the past, present, and future from a new perspective.
