The National Museum of Taiwan Literature will be holding a special exhibition from July 31 to Oct. 6 to present the achievements and development of academic literature institutes in Taiwan, and to highlight the influence and significance of the establishment of the institutes in the country.
In order to help visitors understandthe development of Taiwanese literature, the exhibition presents distinguishing features of 17 literature departments or institutes in the country through brief introductions, event photos, academic papersand publications by literature scholars.
The exhibition divides the history of Taiwanese literature into three stages.
The Initial Stage (1997-2000):
Coinciding with the raise of Taiwan's social consciousness, the first academic institute of Taiwanese literature was established in 1997. Three years later, Tainan-based National Cheng Kung University established a Graduate Institute of Taiwanese Literature, marking the official entry of Taiwanese literature into the country's higher educational system.
The Flourishing Stage (2001-2006):
During this period, Taiwanese literature grew in popularity, with the number of academic departments and institutes in Taiwan increasing significantly. In 2002, the National Cheng Kung University established a Ph.D. program in Taiwanese literature, becoming the first university with a complete curriculum on the subject.
The Transformative Stage (2007-present):
During the past few years, Taiwanese literature education has grown continuously. Through innovative educational programs, the institutes and departments have not only improved their overall academic performance, but have also provided better career opportunities for graduating students.
At present, 17 literature departments or institutes have been established at Taiwan's universities and colleges. According to the latest statistics compiled by the National Museum of Taiwan Literature, since 1997, literature institutes in Taiwan have trained 3,287 students, including 1,789 university graduates, 1,473 Master's graduates and 25 Ph.D. graduates.
