"Joan Miró: Women, Birds, Stars” - the first-ever exhibition from the famed Spanish surrealist to be presented in Taiwan - will be held at the National Museum of History from June 8 through Sept. 25.
Joan Miró i Ferrà (1893 - 1983) was a Spanish painter, sculptor and ceramicist based in Barcelona. Throughout his career, he completed more than ten thousand artworks by mixing different mediums such as oil paints, prints and sculptures. His vision and energy were vividly reflected in a very personal visual language inspired by the forms and colors he observed in nature.
"Joan Miró: Women, Birds, Stars” includes a stunning 86 pieces of artworks on loan from the Miró family collection and the Fundació Joan Miró in Barcelona, a museum established in his native city in 1975 to preserve the artist's works. The exhibition focuses on Miró's style during the 1960s and 1970s, a period of intense creativity in which women, birds and stars became the major motifs of his artistic expression.
The three-month exhibit is comprised of three sections - "Signs,” which explores Miró's personal motif-based language and imagination; "Techniques,” which reviews the different approaches and materials evoked by the artist; and "Objects,” where the Spaniard substitutes his iconography with real-life items, thus giving new meaning to ordinary entities beyond their base functions.
"Joan Miró: Women, Birds, Stars” will also travel to central Taichung and southern Kaohsiung later this year. For more information, please follow the event on Facebook.
