2013 A+ Creative Festival, the biggest design event in Taichung City, opened at the Taichung Cultural & Creative Industries Park on Tuesday and will run through May 14.

As part of the festival, the Bureau of Cultural Heritage under the Ministry of Culture organized an exhibition to display the design works by Taiwanese students who won in the festival's annual competition.

The winners were announced at the opening ceremony and the awards were presented by Wang Shou-lai, director of the Bureau of Cultural Heritage, and other guests of honor.

"Shopping Ethology” by Doze Huang, Rudolf Yang and Green Tseng won the award of visual communication art; Huang Ching-yuan, Tang Chao-ting and Wu Yi-chen were conferred the award of interior design; Hsu Shih-hung won the award of industrial design; and Teng Yung-yun and Hsieh Fang-ying were presented the award of industrial design.

The Ministry offered prize money totaling NT$380,000 (US$12,935) this year to encourage students to join in the creative design profession.

The festival, being held for the fourth year, has been one of the major events at the Taichung park and the most notable design event in central Taiwan, said Wang. He expressed the hope that the festival will become a unique feature of the Taichung Cultural & Creative Industries Park.

In addition, 13 universities and colleges in central Taiwan that offer design-related courses are invited to display their students' works at the festival.

Another two exhibitions feature local students' works winning in such international competitions as Germany's iFDesignAward and Red Dot Award, and works by students from the world's top 30 design schools, including Domus Academy, the Istituto Marangoni and the Istituto Europeo di Design in Italy, and the Academy of Art University in San Francisco.

At the end of the festival, three schools with the best exhibition booth design will receive a prize money of NT$20,000 each.

Moreover, a series of activities are also taking place during the festival, including lectures on creativity, fashion shows, a weekend creative fair and daily street performances.
