The National Taiwan Museum of Fine Arts has curated a special exhibition called "The Variation of Formations" that will grace the first-floor gallery of the Ministry of Culture from July 23 through Dec. 15 at the Xinzhuang Joint Office Tower.
The word "form" comes from the Greek word eidos, which is related to the Greek verb for seeing — idein, which in turn refers to the result of how external forms and internal perceptions are experienced. "Form" could encompass various mediums, styles, patterns, textures, and even perceptions and mindsets. Beyond simply being a representation that can be viewed, an artwork could also be an extension of the artist's sense of self. It reifies ideas and demonstrates the deliberate choices and expressions that were made.
Referencing the collection of the National Taiwan Museum of Fine Arts and showing objects derived from these artworks, this exhibition applies the concept of "form" to deconstruct the original. By reinterpreting the interconnectivity among the original art, the derivative, and the viewer, the exhibition serves as a starting point for dialogue.
Since the National Taiwan Museum of Fine Arts was inaugurated three decades ago, the museum has been devoted to expanding its collection and reconstructing the art history of Taiwan and the genealogy of Taiwanese artists. Further emphasis has been placed on the relationship between its collection and the public as well, with efforts put in organizing different exhibitions, value-added applications, and event planning, which are all intended to bring art into everyday life and satisfy the public's needs for cultural engagement.
Come by the Xinzhuang Joint Office Tower for a glimpse of the creativity of veteran artists including Lee Shi-chi (李錫奇), Yuan Jai (袁旃), Li Yu-chen (李育貞), Chang Yung-tsuen (張永村), Fan Yan-zong (范楊宗), Chou Chu-wang (周珠旺), Chen Chi-mao (陳其茂), Lai Chiu-Chen (賴九岑), Wang Wu (王午), Hsiao Chin (蕭勤), and Liu Kuo-sung (劉國松). The derivative works inspired by their art, with each unique visual style and shape reinterpreted and highlighted, will also be on display.
When people come to see this exhibition, the hope is that in addition to enjoying a unique experience, the artistic playfulness that is incorporated in the design of the exhibition could reignite their interests and yearnings for beauty and aesthetic pleasure.
