Ting Chiang’s laudable piece was a character in the 2003 TV series “Crystal Boys (孽子),” directed by Tsao Jui-yuan (曹瑞原) and adapted from the novel of the same name by writer Pai Hsien-yung (白先勇). Ting played a gay man who reluctantly married a woman due to family pressure when he was young. 

 

 

Ting Chiang was an actor, director, TV show producer, and host. In 1961, he was hired as a contract-based actor for the Central Motion Picture Corporation (中央電影公司). He directed his first movie “The Poisonous Palm (毒火掌)” in 1969. Ting started to appear on screen as a light-hearted entertainer in 1970.

 

In 1971, Ting married actress Li Hsuan (李璇). After getting married, Ting mainly worked behind the scenes and served as a producer to create many films tailored for his wife. The couple moved to the United States in 1976, but they returned to Taiwan in the early 1980s. Due to his performance in the TV movie “Remember Forget (記住 忘了),” Ting won the 2001 Golden Bell Award in the category of Best Miniseries/TV Movie Actor. From 2000 onwards, Ting often appeared in TV series and movies. He even performed with his wife in several drama series, including “Ni Yada (倪亞達)” in 2010 and “Tears on Fire (火神的眼淚)” in 2022.

 

In July 2022, Ting Chiang retired from acting due to poor health. He died on Jan. 27, 2023, at the age of 87. For his achievements in the entertainment industry, Ting was awarded the Special Contribution Award at the 58th Golden Bell Awards in October 2023, which was accepted by his wife Li Hsuan on his behalf.
