Rapport Series V: Residents of Taiwan's Xiqu Center

The three pillars of Taiwan's traditional performance arts

The Xiqu Center is the Taiwan's first professional theater to offer residencies, and space has already been carved out for the Guoguang Opera Company and the National Chinese Orchestra. The center will ultimately serve as a creative platform integrating production with market testing and copyright trade for the entire performance industry.

In addition, it will function as a facility for professional performances, opera research database, and program production. The resident troupes will be offered support and resources to help develop more original programs and induct new trainees to ensure the continuity of traditional performance arts in Taiwan.

The Xiqu Center of Taiwan is also opening up a new southern branch in Kaohsiung by renovating the historic Zuoying Zhongshan Hall, a former performance venue and cinema once used by the Navy and military dependents.

The project is scheduled to be completed in 2018 and will open to the public in the following year, upon which the Taiwan Bangzi Opera Company will become its resident performance troupe.
