Did You Know That … ?
- The museum was established to preserve Taiwan's only Japanese-era penitentiary. The Abashiri Prison Museum on the east coast of Hokkaido can be seen as its Japanese counterpart.
- Because of its proximity to the Alishan mountain range, the prison was constructed out of high-quality timber such as the Formosan Cypress. The original complex was built during 1919 to 1922.
- The wardens also adopted a new penal philosophy influenced by Western school of thought - that of education and reform over punishment.
