Did You Know That … ?
- The Watercourse is a relic of national standing, classified as such by the Ministry of the Interior in 2005. It also received certification as a world-heritage class of civil engineering by the Japan Society of Civil Engineers in 2010.
- The tree-shrouded Watercourse includes two large buildings, plus a handful of smaller structures and a statue dedicated to its main designer, the late Japanese architect Yashiro Hamano (濱野彌四郎).
- The more westerly of the complex's two main buildings resembles a cathedral, with large church-like windows and flying buttresses, although the redbrick exterior is in keeping with typical Taiwanese courtyard homes (三合院).
