Potter | Su Shih-hsiung (II)

Did You Know That … ?

  • His first experience with ceramics was during junior year in college. A vase glazed and fired during a field trip to a ceramics factory left a lasting impression on Su, who noted that he was amazed by the process of transforming earth into art.

  • He was reunited with pottery a couple of years later on his own volition, when his industrial design position provided him the opportunity to work with different materials. He promptly bought an electric kiln and a potter's wheel and began studying the centuries-old craft while adding a little touch of his own inventions.

  • His continuous experimentation and refinement of his technique has led to high failure rates, especially when he takes a hammer to unsatisfactory creations. His current output averages no more than 30 individual pieces a year.
