Did You Know That … ?

  • From 1974 to 1975, Wang spent two summers on the outlying Orchid Island for her photo essay 'Farewell, Orchid Island (再見蘭嶼),' which captured the daily lives of the Tao people and their quickly deteriorating environment.

  • On her stay in Orchid Island, Wang noted that the Tao people were different from other aborigines because of their geographic isolation. However, their self-sufficient way of life began disappearing at an unimaginable pace as the government began to implement urban projects.

  • Arguing that no one should expect the Tao tribe to change their lifestyle overnight, Wang hopes not only to bring their plight to greater attention, but also to raise greater awareness for the need to strike a balance between nature and urban development through her photo-essays.
