MOC | 'Public Construction Golden Quality Award'

The Railway Division of Taiwan Governor-General's Bureau of Transportation Renovation Project, which is being carried out by the National Taiwan Museum, has captured the highest honor for national infrastructure projects at the 16th Public Construction Golden Quality Award.

A total of 51 public projects was entered in the competition organized by the Executive Yuan's Public Construction Commission this year. The Railway Division project was among the four winners of the architecture category, becoming the first Ministry of Culture project to ever win a Public Construction Golden Quality Award.

Completed in 1920 during the Japanese colonial era, the Railway Division of Taiwan Governor-General's Bureau of Transportation is located on the ruins of Qing Dynasty's Department of Machinery in Taipei. The region was also home to the first industrial science park in Taiwan and will soon become the premiere transport hub of Taipei.

The complex was inherited by the Taiwan Railways Administration (TRA) after World War II and served as its headquarters until the TRA relocated to Taipei Main Station in 1990. The Tudor-style building received designation as a national historic monument in 2007 and is now undergoing renovations to become a national railway museum.

The renovations aim to restore the civil, mechanical, and electrical engineering capabilities of six sites - main office building, dining hall, octagonal building, power supply room, workshop, and air-raid shelter - affiliated with the Railway Division of Taiwan Governor-General's Bureau of Transportation, otherwise known as the Taihoku Railway Bureau.

The railway museum is considered phase one of the "Systems of Museums in Taiwan (臺灣博物館系統計畫)” project, which aims to string together a host of cultural sites in Taipei to preserve the nation's historic heritage.
