Spotlight on National Palace Museum

All of these "national treasures" placed on display are exceptionally important works in the history of Chinese art. The goal of this spotlight exhibit on famous artworks is to promote a better understanding of painting and calligraphy with "National Treasure" status for visitors. In doing so, it hopefully reinforces the importance of conserving cultural heritage for appreciation by future generations. The National Palace Museum, Gallery 107 at its Main Building in Taipei is being set aside for special exhibitions of "Spotlight on National Treasures." In each rotation, two works of painting or calligraphy ranked as "National Treasures" are placed on display for approximately three months and changed at regular intervals.

The "Waiting for the Ferry on an Autumn River" depicts an autumn scenery of travelers waiting for the ferry by the riverbank, a painting done by the great artist, Qiu Ying, who was active five hundred years ago. This exquisite artwork is the only extant piece of his panoramic landscapes.

The use of "axe-cut" strokes and moist washing on the mountain stone brings an association with the "Pure Distance of Mountains and Streams" by Xia Gui from the Southern Song dynasty, in which the mountain presents distinct edges and a translucent quality. Qiu Ying tinted the surface in a pure and elegant light green that endues the mountain with quality as lustrous as jade.
