Celebrating the birthday of the City God

A centuries-old tradition championed by Taiwan’s outlying island county of Kinmen takes place every May. The lively celebration marks the birthday of a local deity known as Cheng Huang – literally “the God of the City.” He is believed to have fended off invaders by defending the city walls since ancient times. Today, his followers still pray to Cheng Huang to ward off natural disasters and for national prosperity.
