Port of Keelung, where tears of joy and sadness were shed

The Port of Keelung, which has stood steadfastly at the northern tip of the island for three centuries, is a significant testament to Taiwan’s history. To discuss how to preserve such an important heritage site, the Ministry of Culture invited historian Lin Tong-fa and writer Sang Pin-zai to revisit Keelung port.

No. 2 and No. 3 warehouse on the West Wharf were once the transportation hub for all passengers and goods at Keelung port. Built in 1934, the two warehouses were the only entry point to Taiwan from the sea until the 1950s. The Ministry is now looking into proposals for the preservation and utilization of the wharf and its warehouses.

The spacious West Wharf is currently being considered for commercial development, including maritime skyscrapers and cruise docks. The Ministry of Culture hopes to integrate cultural preservation with urban development by implementing a plan that will nurture both the business and humanitarian aspects of Keelung.
