2021 Green Island Human Rights Art Festival launches online events in light of pandemic

In light of the pandemic, the 2021 Green Island Human Rights Art Festival (2021綠島人權藝術季) has been moved online, with the National Human Rights Museum (NHRM) launching a series of online events at the end of June as an addition to the physical exhibition.

The events include "Through the Reflection of Green Island (假如綠島是一面鏡子)" seminar curated by Kao Jun-honn (高俊宏) which will launch on June 26 and “Green Island Human Rights Art Festival (綠島人權藝術季)" film exhibition by Giloo (Giloo紀實影音), Taiwan's only film festival and issue-oriented audio-visual platform, which will launch on June 28. Through the perspectives of art and human rights, the online events aim to lead the public with visuals and sounds to come to a deeper understanding of the thought-provoking contents of this year's art festival.

Initially launched at the Green Island White Terror Memorial Park (白色恐怖綠島紀念園區) in Green Island, Pingtung County, "Through the Reflection of Green Island” explores life situations revolving around the themes of "imprisonment" and "dispersion" experienced in different eras through contemporary art. It uses diversified creative methods such as literary research, on-site inspections, videos, and writings to explore human rights issues from different perspectives, and use the memory of imprisonment during the White Terror to reflect today.

This year’s film exhibition invited 19 teams of artists from abroad and 16 domestic artists to exhibit 22 to exhibit contemporary artworks related to human rights in addition to sharing their perspectives in an online seminar held on June 26.

In its first collaborative effort with the human rights festival, Giloo has chosen three works, together with selected human rights documentaries, to be featured in this year’s human rights festival, including "Green Island, Home Away from Home (「越」愛綠島我的家)," "Boundaries (界限 / 南北)" and "Fire Island Dark Tour (火燒島黑暗觀光考察團)" from June 28 to July 28 online.
