Taiwanese designers sweep the board at World Stage Design

Taiwanese designers have swept the board at this year's World Stage Design, taking home the first, second, and third prize for Projection Design under the Professional Designers category at the awards ceremony on Aug. 10 in Calgary, Canada.

Wang Yi-sheng (王奕盛) won the first prize for his work "The Colours (墨具五色);" Lee Kuo-han (李國漢) won the second prize for "Break & Break (無用之地);" and Chou Tung-yen (周東彥) bagged the third prize for "Formosa (關於島嶼)" and "Chronicle of Light Year: Taipei-Copenhagen (光年紀事:臺北-哥本哈根)."

2022 WSD is an 11-day event featuring an exhibition of works by designers from 35 countries. After the preliminary selection, a total of 99 entries from the Professional Designer category and 60 entries from the Emerging Designer category were selected to be exhibited at the University of Calgary. 16 pieces of work by 14 Taiwanese designers stood out from 809 submissions from around the world, making Taiwan the biggest winner.

Held every four years in different cities, WSD is a major international theatre design exhibit and event that showcases and celebrates performance design by individual designers, offering a platform for theater workers to study and exchange thoughts on performance arts. It is comprised of 4 distinct components that are presented simultaneously: International Design Exhibition, Competition Scenofest Theatre Architecture Competition (TAC), Technical Invention Prize (TIP).

This year, over 600 designers, architects, technicians, and educators from the United States, the United Kingdom, Finland, Hungary, the Czech Republic, Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Singapore participated in the event. Taiwanese participants were led by the president of the Taiwan Association of Theatre Technology (TATT) Lin Pu (林璞).
