CULTURAL TOURISM PACKAGES PREPARED FOR GREEN ISLAND

Culture Minister Lung Ying-tai instructed on Tuesday that the Human Rights Memorial Museum on Green Island should present a true environmental atmosphere in an effort to help the public better understand the tragic history of Taiwan during its "White Terror” era.

Lung asked related departments to swiftly plan at least two tour routes, with one starting from Zhongliao fishing village, where "White Terror” victims first landed on Green Island, to other renowned historical sites for visitors.

Another shortened and condensed route will accommodate visitors who came to snorkel and relax around the island.

She made the remarks after receiving an administrative briefing at the museum.

The relevant supporting measures regarding the tour routes could be planned in cooperation with Tourism Bureau, Lung said, adding that all signs displayed at the park should also be in English to help non-Chinese speaking visitors better understand the history of Taiwan's human rights development.

The "White Terror” period came after the so-called 228 Incident—an anti-government uprising on February 28, 1947 that was violently suppressed. Numerous civilians were killed, with the estimated number of deaths varying from 10,000 to 30,000.
