NTMoFA to redefine its role, outlook on International Museum Day

The National Taiwan Museum of Fine Arts will roll out a series of activities under the theme "The Future of Tradition: New Roles of a Fine Arts Museum" to celebrate International Museum Day on May 18.

Echoing the global theme "Museum as Cultural Hubs: The Future of Tradition" as set by the International Council of Museums (ICOM) for this year, the fine arts museum came up with the program to highlight its role as a hub while also serving as a museum, a library, and an archive. The future of tradition is also embodied by the museum's utilization of technology to display its exhibitions and create new works derived from its art collection.

By taking part in the upcoming activities organized by the NTMoFA — including workshops, guided tours, theater performances, showcase of its digitization efforts, and a small-scale book exhibition — participants will hopefully be able to gain a deeper understanding of the future that is envisioned by the museum.

The NTMoFA will highlight its role as a museum through four events on May 18: a forum highlighting its architectural development, a guided tour of the museum's special exhibition "Pioneers of the Avant-Grade Movement in Taiwan: From Li Chun-shan to His Disciples," a theater play for children called "Bibo Turtle's Art Adventure," and a showcase of interactive and immersive installations inspired by "Lotus Pond (蓮池)," a 1930 Eastern gouache painting by Lin Yu-shan (林玉山) that is certified as a national treasure.

The museum also has a section dedicated to books and research on fine arts, as well as a picture book area for children below 12 years old, which respectively represent its functions as a library and archive. For International Museum Day, a small-scale book fair, literary walking tours, parent-child reading activities, and a demonstration on operating the NTMoFA's digital data repository will be held.

Admission to the museum's activities for International Museum Day is free to all visitors, and the souvenir shop will be offering up to 30% discount on certain products. The NTMoFA will also collaborate with the neighboring National Taichung Theater to offer joint discounts on May 18.
