MOC, AIT to bring TIME’s women documentary series to Taiwan

The Ministry of Culture is working with the American Institute in Taiwan (AIT) to hold a nationwide documentary tour of TIME magazine's new video series on groundbreaking women. Accompanied by post-screening discussions with directors and special guests, the tour will kick off in Taipei on May 30 and end in Taitung on June 3, with stops scheduled for Tainan, Kaohsiung, and Pingtung along the way.

"TIME Firsts" is a multimedia project featuring candid interviews with 45 groundbreaking women, from which 24 episodes have been selected for the Taiwan screenings. Some of these women Hillary Clinton, Nikki Haley, Nancy Pelonsi, Oprah Winfrey, Ellen DeGeneres — are well-known for their personal stories of setbacks and success.

Others — Danica Patrick, first woman to lead in the Indianapolis 500 and the Daytona 500; tennis pro Serena Williams; Sylvia Earle, first woman to become chief scientist of the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration; philanthropist Melinda Gates; Kathryn Sullivan, first American woman to walk in space — are no less extraordinary.

Diane Tsai (蔡安瑾), the Taiwanese-American producer of "TIME Firsts," will also accompany the tour from Taipei to Tainan, Kaohsiung, Pingtung, and Taitung to discuss female empowerment, immigration, civic engagement, indigenous rights, and audiovisual documentation. The first forum of the free series will be held at Taipei's Witch House on May 30 and is dedicated to the revolutionary influence of youth-driven media.

Tsai's visit is supported by the American Film Showcase, a joint project of the US Department of State's Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs and the University of Southern California's School of Cinematic Arts.

This documentary tour is organized by AIT and the Ministry of Culture to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the Taiwan Relations Act and AIT@40 Immigration & Exchange Month
