'In Search of Gods'

"In Search of Gods,” an exhibition exploring philosophic questions over the meaning of life, will be held at the National Taiwan Museum of Fine Arts from May 26 through July 28.

Roughly 20 artworks with deific references from the collection of the Ministry of Culture's Art Bank Taiwan will be showcased to show artistic inquiries into life and death through the employment of philosophic theories and religions.

The exhibition will ask questions such as "Who are we?” and "Where are we from?” and "Where do we go when we die?” to simultaneously provoke thinking and comfort audiences.

In addition, it will also highlight artists' inner emotions regarding their confusion over of mortality and religious worship through three themes - "Heaven and Man,” "Asking Gods,” and "Deification.”

From the perspective of contemporary art, artworks under the three themes will reflect on politic and social phenomena by deifying characters in fairy tales, national leaders, and existing subjects in a sarcastic and humorous way.

Art Bank Taiwan is an initiative established by the Ministry of Culture to support Taiwan's emerging young artists, introduce Taiwanese artworks to foreign audiences, and promote cultural diplomacy.

Since its establishment, it has encouraged public and private sectors to showcase artworks in public spaces to foster wider artistic appreciation and vitalize the local art market.
