As part of its 40th anniversary celebrations this year, Taiwan's world-class Cloud Gate Dance Theatre (雲門舞集) will hold free outdoor performances across Taiwan throughout the month of July.

The renowned dance troupe will present scenes from its most popular productions, including 'Crossing the Black Water,' 'Legacy,' 'Moon Water,' 'Pine Smoke,' and 'How Can I Live On Without You,' in Taipei and Taichung on July 13 and July 20, respectively.

'Cloud Gate: 40th Anniversary Free Outdoor Performances,' which will be part of the 2013 Cathay Arts Festival, will take place at the main plaza of the National Theater Concert Hall in Taipei and the Civic Square in Taichung.

The Cathay Arts Festival has provided funding for Cloud Gate to hold free performances around Taiwan since 1996. As of last year, the group had held 50 such shows in over 20 cities and townships around the country, attracting hundreds of thousands of spectators.

Established in 1973, Cloud Gate has been called 'Asia's leading contemporary dance theatre' by the Times in London. Its production 'Moon Water' was selected by the New York Times as the best dance of 2003.

UPDATED ON JULY 11, 2013:

Cloud Gate Dance Theatre has called off its public performance that was scheduled for Saturday in Taipei, after the Central Weather Bureau issued a land warning for Typhoon Soulik.

The dance troupe said the stage that it had set up at Liberty Square for the free performance will have to be taken down for safety reasons. The show cannot be postponed to Sunday because it requires at least two days to erect the stage.

However, a parent-childrhythmical movement session and public performances on July 19 and 20 will be held as scheduled in Taichung, the dance troupe said.
