The newly opened Taiwan Contemporary Culture Lab will hold a special exhibition entitled "Re-Base: When Experiments Become Attitude" to showcase its modus operandi as a platform for cultural experimentation and innovation from Nov. 10, 2018 through Jan. 27, 2019.
Inaugurated in August 2018, C-Lab is located on the former site of the ROC Air Force Commander Headquarters in Taipei, the grounds of which was originally used by the Industrial Research Institute of the Taiwan Governor General's Office during Japanese rule. Curator Wang Jun-jieh (王俊傑) organized this exhibition to investigate the meaning and possibility of experimentation under the restrictions of contemporary global standardization.
When the Air Force Commander Headquarters withdrew from this venue, the function of the site also shifted. The newly resurrected base will serve as platform for dialogue as well as a place for convergence. The pre-established functions of the space will be broken through and a new network of interconnectivity will be generated.
This exhibition references certain concepts from the legendary 1969 exhibition "Live in Your Head: When Attitudes Become Form," curated by esteemed Swiss curator Harald Szeemann to insert burgeoning art trends into the stark white spaces of traditional art museums. "Re-Base" aims to examine the essence and meaning of the site itself, which has evolved from a heavily guarded military base to an open space for cultural experimentation, and study art as a construct of contemporary civilization and identity.
Eleven interdisciplinary artists and art collectives — whose expertise span visual, conceptual, performance, literary, and new media arts — will create site-specific works for this exhibition. Diversity will be achieved by incorporating installations, collaborations, performances, and forums, in which these elements will both interfere with and inform the exhibition.
As one examines the issues of art, civilization, and historic construct, one must also take into consideration the peripheral issues of environment, space, behavior, and life by asking: is humankind consciously changing or re-creating civilization? C-Lab seeks the moment in which experiments become attitude.
