The Ministry is dedicated to preserving Taiwan's comics heritage, supporting and mentoring Taiwanese comics artists, and fostering the digitization and multimedia applications of Taiwan's original comics.
Policies & Initiatives
Supervision of the nation's comics sector falls under the Ministry's Department of Humanities & Publications, whose top priorities include:
- Creating an ecosystem conducive to comics creation.
The Ministry has six major policies relating to comics, including to prepare a better environment for creation and provide diverse channels for publication; establish a comics information platform; broaden support for the anime, comics, and gaming (ACG) sectors; and establish a national comics museum. It is the first time that the government has decided to include comics in the Forward-looking Infrastructure Development Program, along with a special budget to strengthen cross-field integration.
- Researching and archiving Taiwan’s comics heritage.
Comics encapsulate the generational memories and intimate details of everyday life in Taiwan. The systematic collection, preservation, and revitalization of Taiwan's comics heritage will be carried out through digital archives such as the Creative Comic Collection (CCC) — an iconic magazine featuring comics by local artists that take inspiration from Taiwan's history, culture, and nature.
- Launching a base for Taiwanese comics creation.
Comprising four floors, the upcoming Taiwan Comic Base at Taipei's Datong District will display and sell original Taiwan comic products on first floor, use the second and third floors for holding exhibitions and events, and use the fourth floor for comic artists to create, interact, and cultivate assistants. The rooftop will also be converted into a garden for artists to rest and communicate.
- Establishing Taiwan’s first national comics museum.
The National Comics Museum in Taichung is scheduled to be established in 2020 to promote Taiwanese comics as well as preserve and revitalize related artifacts and documents. Comprising of an international comics think tank and research center, a library, classrooms, interactive exhibitions, screening rooms, creative shops, and archives, the museum aims to revive Taiwan's comics heritage and introduce local original works to the world.
