National Museum of History runs exhibition on Taiwan’s modernist art movement

The newly reopened National Museum of History (NMH) collaborates with the National Taiwan Craft Research and Development Institute’s (NTCRI) Taipei Branch to stage an exhibition titled “Fifth Moon and Ton-fan: The Birth of Modernist Art Movement in Taiwan (五月與東方—臺灣現代藝術運動的萌發).”

Aiming to retell Taiwan’s history of art, this exhibition illustrates a comprehensive picture of the post-war modern art movements in the country through the development of the Fifth Moon Art Group (五月畫會) and Ton-fan Group (東方畫會). As avant-garde art groups, they were widely influential from the 1950s to 1970s. This grand-scale exhibition features 144 artworks from 41 artists.

In the opening ceremony on Feb. 22, Culture Minister Shih Che remarked that this exhibition serves as a lesson on the history of Taiwan’s art and culture by highlighting the determination of the predecessors to break through boundaries. He invites the public to visit the exhibition and appreciate the art in these artists’ progressive and forward-looking vision.

The exhibition opens now until Apr. 28 at the NTCRI’s Taipei Branch. For more information, please visit NMH’s website and Facebook page
